UK REGO Prices Continue to Rise

In recent weeks we have seen the value of “green” UK REGO (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin) certificates rise sharply as the gap narrows between Green and Deep Green REGO certificates

The Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) scheme help provide consumers with confidence and clarity about the renewable generation proportion of the electricity their energy supplier source.

What is a Rego?

Ofgem issues one REGO certificate per megawatt-hour (MWh) of eligible renewable output to renewable electricity generators.

The purpose of the certificate is to prove to the final customer that a given share of energy was produced from renewable sources. The primary use of REGOs in Great Britain and Northern Ireland is for Fuel Mix Disclosure (FMD). FMD requires licensed electricity suppliers to disclose to potential and existing customers the mix of fuels (coal, gas, nuclear, renewable and other) used to generate the electricity supplied.

Deep Green REGO Certificates derive their classification from wind, solar and hydro, whilst Green REGO Certificates are issued for other renewable technologies such as anaerobic digestion and biomass.

With a shortage of Deep Green REGOs in the market, buyers are increasingly looking for Green REGOs.

The market for UK REGOs is being driven by

  • Higher levels of demand for renewable power from corporates, particularly those RE100 members with UK operations
  • Lower load factors from wind and hydro generation as a result of unfavourable weather conditions
  • Increase in electricity demand due to Covid bounce back / recovery
  • Sharp rise in the wholesale price of power
  • Reduced interconnection capacity with Europe due to outages and less flow of European Guarantees of Origin (GOs)
  • Increased uncertainty surrounding the acceptance of European GOs in the future

C-Zero is working with several suppliers actively looking to purchase UK REGO certificates. We can amalgamate smaller volumes to provide a route to market for REGO certificate trading for independent renewable generators of all technologies.
